Technical & Professional School

Purpose

Haiti ARISE Technical & Professional School exists to provide quality and practical education and hands-on training in skilled trades and technical studies. Classes are taught by qualified & trained Haitian teachers as well as international volunteer teachers. We are recognized by the Haitian government to be able to offer degrees, diplomas and certificates in studies enduring from 1 year to 3 years.

Construction

The original school facility had just been completed before the January 12, 2010 earthquake, which severely damaged it beyond repair. The re-construction of Haiti ARISE Technical & Professional School has been designed to accommodate 4 times as many classrooms as the original school did. Facilities include sit-down classes, lab rooms, a library, a full industrial kitchen, dining area, and restrooms. Classes are furnished to house a computer lab, sewing lab, electricity lab, plumbing lab and cooking classes, as well as other sit down classes such as English, Business, French and Mathematics. An additional shop facility for Carpentry, Mechanics and Welding shop classes are adjacent to the main building.

Construction & operations of the school is sponsored byCrossroads Church, Red Deer, Alberta.

Current operations

The first technical classes opened in 2005 with basic typing and English as a Second Language, and classes being held in the open air under mango trees before the original facilities were complete. To date, classes have been offered in ESL, Typing, Music, Basic Computers, Small Business, Sewing, Knitting, Cooking, Carpentry, Mechanics, Electricity and Agriculture, with more than 350 students at the end of Dec 2009. Due to the setback of facilities having to be rebuilt after the earthquake, classes were limited to Bible College, ESL and Computers being held in temporary classrooms for two years.

The new construction of the technical school was completed in January 2013. We celebrated the Grand Opening of the new Haiti ARISE Technical & Professional School in November 2014 after classes had been running for one whole year.

We currently are holding courses in Computer & Information Technology with a state-of-the art computer lab, Electricity & Plumbing, Tiling, Construction, Windows Technique, Sewing, Mechanics, ESL & Bible. Courses run between 1 to 3 years and students are provided a certificate, diploma or degree upon their graduation of their course of student.

A partnership is being developed with Red Deer College, in Red Deer, Alberta and their trades department. In 2014, a team of trades professors from RDC visited Haiti ARISE Techical & Professional School, assisting in establishing an electrical lab and a plumbing lab. The professors evaluated the skill and level of training our students had received in these courses and shared that our first year students were able to execute practical skills that RDC 3rd year students were not yet able to do.

Students pay a small contribution to attend classes. In comparison to most post-secondary schools in PAP, the capital city, our courses are very affordable.

Student fees are currently:

500 gds (about $10 US) entry fee

1,500 gds (about $30 US) materials fee- for their practicum materials

1,500 gds (about $20 US) per trimester

These fees do not cover the actual cost of operations. They are a contribution required to ensure students value their education.
